THE MONARCH COMIC BOOK AND VIDEO

Epidermolysis bullosa is a rare genetic condition that causes extremely fragile skin, leading to blisters and tears from even the slightest friction. While there is no cure, treatments focus on managing symptoms and preventing complications. For younger children, daily care often involves hours spent with caregivers and nurses cleaning wounds and changing bandages—a physically and emotionally draining routine.

With this challenge in mind, we proposed creating a comic book series to engage children during their care routines while empowering them to talk about their condition with confidence. From this idea, The Monarch was born. The story follows Emmie, a young girl with EB, who is defined by much more than her condition. Imaginative, studious, kind, and a self-fashioned superhero, Emmie embodies resilience and creativity. Through her adventures, The Monarch inspires children to see themselves beyond their diagnosis and encourages conversations about their experiences in a way that is both accessible and uplifting.
